Now that Jan and I are empty nesters again, and Jan had 100 hours of vacation he needed to use or loose before the end of the year, we decided to take a little trip to Sedona. It is so beautiful there. Once again I kept thinking of the Primary song "I'm so glad that I live in this beautiful world, Heavenly Father created for me."
I do not have a good picture of my most favorite thing. (Well my second most favorite thing. I do have a picture of my favorite thing. He is right there!) They have mountains shaped like everything - Snoopy, coffee pots, bells, and so on. But they have one formation named "Madonna and Child" and it really looks like the world's largest nativity. I love nativities, and I loved that rock formation the most.

1. North Stake Rocks

2. We have the most awesome Young Women in our ward. They are brave and kind and smart and funny!

3. People come from all over the world to see something I live only a half day's drive away from. Can't believe I had never been to Arches National Park before. It was amazing. I kept thinking about the Primary song, "I'm so glad that I live in this beautiful world, Heavenly Father created for me."

4. I love going places with my hubby. He is the BEST travel partner!

5. Even though our young women repelled, went white water rafting and hiked - going down the twisty slide at the Rec Center was as high adventure as the Bishop and I get!

When we are together we love to eat. Here we are celebrating Kyle's graduation a little early. See how much he is enjoying it. My photography skills once again.

I love being all together. And I really love hearing my family sing together. Even if it is Guitar Hero. They are pretty talented. Even though Brittany is not in this picture, don't let that fool you. She plays one mean guitar. Like I said - all talented.

I Love My Job

I really do work hard at my little "job" and it can be very frustrating, but this little sweetie made my day. I just sold it for $400.00. So keep your eyes peeled for another copy all you guys and girls. I think I can credit it to my "years" of book experience starting to pay off, or maybe to blessings following me home from the temple. But I spotted this at a sale on the way home from the temple. The books had obviously been previously picked over by a book dealer, but this gem caught my eye, and I decided to risk $1 that it was worth something. When I got home I was surprised to find out it is very sought after, out of print, coming of age book from the 60's. Women around the age of 57 have very fond memories of it. And now there is a woman of 48 who has very fond memories of it too. :)

Louisville has the coolest bike racks

Isn't this amazing? They have different ones all over downtown.

The Louisville Slugger Factory was pretty sweet too.

And it was fun to get to taste White Castle Burgers for the first time.

But that was about all I can recommend from my Louisville trip.....
I can say, never, never, never, eat a meal at the Louisville Convention Center.

Thankfully I was with some amazing people for the trip. Yeah RaeAnn, Verna, Norma, Cathy, Mariah and Charlene! But since I don't plan on going on another NHS trip, just think, you will never have to squeeze into an airplane seat by me again!!

Look where I got to go. You would think, "Go Cougars!" But no... Yale has the same logo as BYU and the same color! I had the opportunity to go to New Haven, Connecticut to visit an awesome non-profit there to see how they were doing community building. While there we toured Yale and my brain kept getting so confused because I saw the BYU "Y" everywhere.
It was especially fun because I was able to go with my two buddies, RaeAnn and Verna. Boy can the three of us party. Ha Ha. We ate at McDonald's almost every meal with our per diem.

This is the only picture I snapped of the wonderful team in Connecticut that was so nice to us while we were there. They do amazing work revitalizing neighborhoods and rehabbing amazing Victorian Homes.
Yale was awesome. It is 300 years old and has the most amazing architecture. But I still love my "Y" better.

Wow, another post. I know my vast readership is amazed. All two of you! I have been wanting to post about something I have been working on. I was inspired by two things, my grandson and the movie "Julie and Julia".

At Christmas, Jason and Britt gave us the cutest cookbook with their favorite recipes and the most darling pictures of my sweet grandson, Janson. I decided that just like Julie cooks every recipe in Julia Child's cookbook, I would cook every recipe in Jason and Brittany's cookbook. I knew the recipes would be good, but my real motivation was probably getting the chance to look at Janson's pictures as much as possible.

I have made most of the recipes. Started in December when we made the pizzas for Kevin's birthday and the latest attempt was when I made the Pasta Milano this week for dinner. YUM! Still have a few more to go, mostly desserts, which we are trying to cut back on, but I just may have to sacrifice to finish my project. :) Maybe my visiting teachees and neighbors will benefit. The one that is worrying me the most is the sauce to go on fish (no explanation necessary for anyone that knows me at all).

I love to get yummy recipes from my kids. Katy and Lauren have given me yummy recipes too. (Just shared Lauren's Chicken Zucchini salad recipe with a friend.) Oh family and food. Just love em!

You may have heard of the Project 1/365 challenge (or something like that). I just ran across it on my son's blog. It is a challenge to post one photo every day for 365 days. I thought I would take up the challenge, but put a little twist. I have now completed my challenge. It is to post once in 365 days! For someone that loves to read others blogs, I am terrible about keeping mine up. So I thought I would post one photo of Katy before she comes home (which she reminded us in her last letter is NOT soon! But it is soon whether she wants to believe it our not. I'm glad she loves her mission and wants to stay focused.) And even though most of you have probably already seen this photo on the blog I do for Katy. Here it is again. So I have a packet of stuff I have to send to my mission prez before I leave and it requests I send a picture of myself about 2 by 3 inches. So I decided if he is going to have to look at it for a year and a half it might as well be a good picture. So I sent him the following pictures. The second picture is my first choice but I also sent the first one just in case he doesn't think its quite as funny as I do. Over all if it gets on the board I will be so happy and if not at least the mission prez will get a little taste of whats coming in a month :D :D

Then we ventured to Walmart for a fantastic adventure... OK i know we are weird but it was so fun just to go against the social norm and not really care what anyone thought about us. So you can think what you want but I know Im... cool? haha! I just figured I would get some of my Crazies out before my mission where this would not be acceptable.

I am slow posting this, but we had so much fun with Gary and Madison in San Diego this summer. Gary took us to the bay for a day. We could not stop laughing.

Kyle was brave enough to go on Big Mable with me and I had the ride of my life! Look how supportive he is when I landed in the water. (I have not laughed that hard for a long time myself!)

Just got back to BYU at the beggining of the week and I think that Im really excited for school for possibly the first time in my life. Here are the reason's why:

1. Jason and Britt are still here (even though its only for a little while)
2. I actually enjoy working at the restaurant with Kyle and Lauren
3. I am taking cool classes like flexibility and astronomy!
4. I have amazing roomies that I actually chose for the first time!!!
5. My roomies rock
6. My roomies rock (that deserves three)
7. I will only be here for one semester so it will be a short year!
8. I WILL BE GETTING MY CALL SOON!!!! And that will just make the semester amazing
9. My mission prep class!
10. It's not snowing yet!
11. FOOTBALL

14. Im back where Thai Ruby and J-Dawgs are!

Sumer Fun

So we haven't posted much about what is going on this summer so here is a little bit of an update from my perspective:

Kevin: Kevin is working as a lifeguard for the City of North Las Vegas at Hartke pool. This is the pool just down the street from our house which makes it nice for saving gas! He works with lots of fun kids his age and seems to come home with a new story or card game everyday. Two days ago at the pool they had a little girl step on this large metal pin thing (i still don't know what it was) and had to be rushed to the emergency room with this "thing" stickin out of her foot. :D He loves his video games and computer as usual! He also just found out that he got a 4 on his History AP exam!! WAY TO GO TOM!

Kaitlyn: I am the aquatics coordinator for the City of North Las Vegas. This means I am kevin and about 100 other lifeguards, instructors and pool managers' boss! O the joy of telling teenagers what to do.... (exaggeration). It keeps me very busy. I like my job, especially the emergencies (like the girl with the pin in her foot) are pretty awesome! I started my mission papers and am working on getting all the medical stuff finished. I have just realized more and more how Satan will do all that he can to prevent us from doing what's right. So you gotta stay focused!! I will be returning to BYU in the fall to complete one more semester before my mission.

Kyle and Lauren: Kyle is home working for Pool Chlore (?) again and is loving it. He is learning lots of new things like how to install a toilet and how to tile and how to do donuts in a forklift. He seems to be quite the favorite of his boss!! He misses Lauren A LOT!! She is back in Provo going to school and working with her dance company. They both make frequent trips back and forth to see each other but i think they are surviving the trauma pretty well.

Jason and Britt: See their blog... All i really know is they are having fun and i freaking miss them!!!

Family Fort Fun

We may be much older than the usual fort builders but we had a fun FHE attempting to make our own family version of a fort. It was really funny actually. We come no where close to the high class fort building skills of Jameson, Cooper and Caleb but there is still time to learn, I guess.Don't we just look so excited???

We then watched Tootsie ... an old Dustin Hoffman classic. It was actually really funny. Who knew cross dressing could be a hit in our home?

So I went to talk to the French Professor I work for and to give him some stuff to hold till I come back in the Fall. And I was just telling him how grateful I was for the job and all. After a hard fought game with the Refs... I mean opposing team, the Civic Center Ward was able to pull off their first win in tournament play! The opponent had some good plays though, especially 2 techs on Lance for "flopping" when a player drove to the basket (apparently the player did not touch him, and because he still fell, he deserved a technical foul), and also another one for "mocking", when he was getting himself pumped by counting off the seconds with his own version of an arm count, as we attempted to hold the opponent in the backcourt for the turnover. Since this arm count was similar to the one the ref uses when he counts the seconds a team has been in the backcourt, he was once again slapped a technical foul without hesitation.
But these refs weren't all that bad. Once the red team had 6 players on the court when they inbounded the ball, and the refs realized that they had already given enough technical fouls for the game, and kindly asked one player to sit on the bench. Oh, and the one ref that makes an appearence in these photos happens to be the only ref that didn't give Lance a tech. :D I liked him.

Undefeated Season. It's Official!

Civic Center Ward made it through the entire regular season undefeated! Eventhough the game last night was supposed to be a ward's "B" team, but they somehow decided to put all their good players on their "B" team when we played them last night (eventhough we had already played their "A" team.) It was a good game. Kevin is an awesome player. Highest scorer on the team and probably in the stake too. (A couple of weeks ago he was #2, and we haven't checked since then.) He has some great moves. We would have some nice pictures, but Dad had the camera and got too excited and forgot to take any pictures. Gotta run. Headed to the temple. Love you!

When the moon hits your eye like a personal sized pizza pie!

Britt and I had a great time and made ourselves some homemade pizza on Prez-day. I have to say it was some of the best homemade pizza I've ever had. We used a recipe I found on some random blog. It worked out pretty well.

First we had to show the dough who was boss, it was really tough dough. I think that's why it was so good.

Then slide those suckers onto our pizza stones using our cutting board as a makeshift pizza peel. Conveniently and personally sized.

Such a beautiful sight! And Britts lookin' pretty good too. Just kidding hun, you look great. I love you more than pizza! ( I hope you realize how much that means ;) )

While Britt was modeling with her pizza I got down to business, because let's face it...pizza is for stuffing of the face. As Nacho Libre may have said it if the movie were set in Italy instead of Mexico: "Get that pizza into my face!" Man, I NEVER get tired of that...

Birthday Brittany

We had a lot of fun for Britt's birthday last Friday. Here are just a few of the highlights...

We started off with a nice breakfast of eggs, bacon, and toast. Britt opened some presents from me.

Later when she got home from work, she opened some more presents including tons of fun stuff from Mom which Britt obviously loved.

And we ended the day with a visit to The Melting Pot. Though we had to wait for a while to get in, it was totally worth it.

President Hinckley's viewing

So my roomies and I decided to drive down to Salt Lake for President Hinckley's viewing today. It was so peaceful. Seeing him was pretty powerful. Just to see this little man who almost looked blissful lying there. The part that hit me the most was seeing his hands. It just made me think about how grateful I was for all that those two hands have done for me personally. Then when I looked around at the huge line of people I realized how many lives he affected and how many people where changed through him. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have lived during the time that he has served here on earth. I remember him saying once that he worried he would be remembered as the prophet no one listened to, I want to do everything I can to make that not true. We all should be doing that we can to repay this man who did so much for us. Never forget his dedication to our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. He had a lot to teach us ... and we have a lot to learn.

We love you President Hinckley! Thank you for all you did for us!

While raiding Grandma Ainge's stash of antique hats for Emily's crazy hat b-day party, we all had a really good time trying on different hats and wistfully thinking of a time when one could reasonably don such elaborate head apparel.

If only they had been born 80 years ago.

I must say, I'm looking quite debonair. And Brittany looks quite...whatever the female equivalent to debonair is.

Making the best of winter

Since we are stuck here in the snow all winter, Katy and I decided to take advantage of the less than desirable weather and learn how to snowboard. Here are a few photos from our adventurous first day of snowboarding...

A quick pic from Dani's open house in Bountiful the other night. We had quite a time trying to find the place. We ended up having to call Katy's old roommate from Bountiful to give us directions. If we would have just had more faith in the directions from Google we would have found it fine, but we though we were smarter than Google. Big mistake!

Both Dani and John seemed really happy. It was fun to see them, Kara, and Aunt Christine too.

It's fun to have two guitars and be able to play together now. We also had a good time playing the Scene It game I just got for Xbox 360 too.

Christmas in Provo

We had a pretty eventful Christmas here in Provo. On Christmas Eve Britt and I along with Dale, Judy, Caitlyn and Emily went to see the new National Treasure movie. I've never seen the first one so I wasn't even really sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was a pretty fun movie, although it was a little longer than it needed to be. It really started dragging at about the 2 hour mark. I would recommend seeing it, it's a solid 3 stars (out of 5). The Jordan Commons theaters are really nice too. They do assigned seating there, and it is so nice not to have to get there 45 minutes early to find seats. That and combined with the digital sound and projection make it one of the best theaters around in my opinion.

After the movie we went to Joe's Crab Shack, where Jeff and Amber met us. We don't get to go there very often because they closed the one in Provo last year so we were really excited for the crab daddy feast! We had their new Garlic Steamed Mussels, they we're so good and they probably had more garlic than any one dish should legally have. I think I can still smell a hint of garlic on my breath.

Then it was time for the crab! Britt and I shared the Crab Daddy Feast which comes with a half pound of each snow, dungeness, and king crab. Dungeness was by far the best. I think next time we go we'll just get all dungeness. It's just so much sweeter than the others.

After dinner we went back to the Ainge's home and got our bedding situated for the night while we waited for Brycen to get off work and join us. He just got a job at a really good pizza joint in Salt Lake called "The Pie." When he got there we read Luke Chapter 2 together and Caitlyn read us a story called "Santa and the Christchild" (I think?). After that we opened gifts from siblings and the pajamas Judy got for us all.

We were all ready for bed after that so we all hit the hay. Christmas morning went pretty normally other than Dia exuberance at being surrounded by so many new things to chew on. It's crazy to think that we really have no idea where we'll be when next Christmas rolls around. We'd really like to make it to Vegas and we're hoping well be in a position to do so, it's just fun to wonder where life is going to take us next.

With finals over and school on break, Britt and I finally got some time the other day to get our Christmas decorations up. We put up our little tree and even put together a put together a gingerbread house. Mom would be so proud!

I did work on the house some, though I probably did more candy eating than decorating. I guess that would make me the foreman.

The beauty of the finished product truly speaks for itself.

We had fun with our gingerbread house. It was pretty easy with the ready made kit, but I did miss the jenga-like excitement that came with making the house from scratch. We thought we would start off easy. Maybe someday we will be able to tackle a gingerbread house without Costco's help, but till then we're pretty happy with our work.

Best Alfredo Recipe

So I just thought I would also add a recipe that is pretty much divine!

Chicken Alfredo

Chicken: (you can do this as the sauce is cooking)
3 chicken breasts W/ crushed garlic cloves
Put chicken and crushed garlic in a frying pan and cook all the way through.
Cut into small pieces and put to the side.

Sauce:
2 cups heavy cream
1 stick butter
2 TB cream cheese
Combine all wait till about to boil, turn down heat and add
1/2 cup Real Parmesan cheese
garlic powder to taste
let simmer for 20 min (Stir occasionally)

1 pkg angel hair pasta (make as package directs)

add all ingredients together and enjoy... its really good with French bread or garlic bread

Recipe: South of the Border Sandwiches

Mom wanted this recipe for the sandwiches we made over conference weekend so I thought I would just post it for everyone. It's a pretty quick and easy recipe and it's quite tasty.

South of the Border Sandwiches

8 sandwich rolls or 1 loaf of French bread
1/2 cup chopped olives
1/2 tsp. chili powder
1/2 tsp. ground cumin
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup mayo
1/3 cup sour cream
1/3 cup green onions, chopped (I like it better without these)
3/4 to 1 lb. thinly sliced turkey (from the deli is best, but any lunch meat turkey works)
2 tomatoes, sliced
2 avocados, sliced
3/4 cup cheddar cheese
3/4 cup pepper jack or Monterrey jack cheese

Preheat oven to 350º. Mix all ingredients except turkey, tomatoes, avocados, and cheese. Put sliced rolls on baking sheet. Spread half the mixture on bottom half of rolls. Layer turkey, tomatoes and avocados on rolls. Spread remainder of mixture on turkey, tomatoes, and avocados. Top with cheese and close sandwiches. Bake for 15 minutes or until heated through.

I know we haven't updated in a while. With Britt being sick and finals, we've both been pretty wiped out. I can't wait till this semester is over. It's smooth sailing after that, hopefully.

Britt complained to me the other day that our blog was really ugly (when compared to other blogs in the family). I told her she was free to change it any time she liked, but that I wasn't going to take the time to make it all pretty. Maybe when she isn't so swamped with school her scrapbooking/arts & crafts genes will kick in and she will spruce the blog up a little bit (she's got a really good eye for design when she has the time to focus on it). Until then, enjoy our ugly blog! :)

And speaking of ugly, they are tearing down more of the old DT buildings. I walk past them every day on the way to school. It's fun to see how far they are getting, but I have yet to pass by when they are actually in the act of demolishing something. That's the really fun part!

trilogy. Apparently the next book will come out in September 2008 (I think), and it will no longer be a trilogy because Chris has decided to split the last book into two separate books.

Katy's Halloween Fun

So I just wanted to show you guys my awesome and scary costumes from this halloween. My roomies and I dressed up in 80s for a party at one of those security system places and then I dressed up as a scary thing in that awesome wedding dress I got at the thrift store for our ward halloween party. Im freaking out my FHE bro Logan in one of the pics above. It was pretty freaking sweet! I kept scaring people when I walked by them ... :D Anyways... enjoy!

Last weekend we went with Britt's family to help them pick out a new dog. After much deliberation, and trips between a few pet stores (should we get the papillon, the Burmese mountain dog, or the corgi, etc.) they decided on a cute little border collie.

While I was hoping they would get the corgi (I love those dogs!), the border collie is super cute too and she will be really fun when she gets a little older.

Her name is Dia. Short for diamant, or diamond in French. Hmmmm...I wonder who came up with that one? ;)

That would be great if you sent the emails after you write them. These computers are really old and it takes most of our time just trying to get into myldsmail. Also, I don't know if I told you last time but I can respond to any one in the family. Anyone else I can read their email but not respond.

So my first week was good. We don't really have a teaching pool so we have been in the finding mode. Sister Berryman said that the last couples of weeks have been the hardest to find people in a long time. Which just means we need to work harder and have more faith! We have met some amazing people and the ward spoils us to death. We are working with a ward and the singles branch in the stake. They are wonderful and have really made me feel right at home. My companion (Sister Berryman) has been serving in this area for almost 10 months and knows everyone (which has been really nice). Yesterday we were at church or meetings all day long (7-8pm). Craziness! I am waking up earlier to study some Bulgarian in the morning and carrying cards around with me. I just keep praying that we'll run into someone that speaks it. I actually have used it quite a bit. People (especially members) ask me to say something or pray in Bulgarian (which makes life fun).

We are working with some wonderful part-member families. One of which (Susie) her husband has been a member for 30 years and both of her sons served missions but she is still waiting for a lightning bolt. Her husband is really sweet. He said he prayed me here and really wants her to accept our invitation for baptism. Another one is in the same situation, Jean and Adam. She says she has a hard time accepting the first vision but believes
in the Book of Mormon and latter-day prophets. Also her ex-husband won't let Adam (their child who is 10) get baptized. Jean really wants to get baptized with Adam. We basically need lots of miracles. Don't worry, I'll let you know what happens.

I can't believe that Holly and Bam both have their permits. That's crazy! We are actually not on bikes (which is nice). All of the sisters and most of the elders have cars and cell phones. We are really spoiled.

Sister Wadsworth (A.K.A. Heidi)

Heidi (Sister Wadsworth) has finally left the MTC! She and her two companions have not received their visas, so they ended up staying in the MTC for an extra two weeks to wait for the visas to come or be temporarily reassigned. One of her companions, Sister Carter, was reassigned to Independence, Missouri, and the other (Sister Thompson) is in Des Moines, Iowa. When the visas come in, the Church will send them to Bulgaria within a week, so we don’t know how long she’ll be serving in Washington. We received this letter yesterday...

Dearest family,

Hello! So you’ve all heard, but I’m leaving Monday to serve in the Washington Tacoma mission. I fly out Monday at 5am with four elders and another sister. I also found out that Tacoma is a biking mission. I don’t really know what I’m going to do about that, but I guess I’ll figure that out when I get there. Here are some pictures of when we got our calls. They usually just read it to you (where you are reassigned), but we asked the Travel Office lady if she would write them, so we could read them. It was really exciting. We all were screaming—the Polish elders (3), our new Bulgarian elders (4), me and my comps (3), and our teachers (3).

Uncle Bud's Funeral

Uncle Bud's Funeral was very nice. Jeff gave the family prayer. Kenna, Lori and Dawn all sang solos and it was beautiful. Jan officiated and spoke. Two of Mikes son's spoke. They all did an awesome job. It was very touching. Uncle Jerry and Aunt Nell were the only ones of the siblings able to be there. They had a nice luncheon at the chapel afterwards. It was nice to talk to Joe Higbee. Jan says that he wants to go up there and interview him about his memories of Mom because they were so close and he has so many stories.
The flowers Kenna ordered for us were beautiful also.

Good news!!!! Jodi just announced she and Ryan are expecting baby number two in November!!!! We were so surprised and absolutely thrilled!!!!! The new baby and Andi will be about 17 or 18 months apart. Andi will be one in June, so what does that make it.....you guys do the math, figures are not my thing....!!! Anyway, by the end of 2007, we will have had three new grandchildren, what a blessed year. We are so very grateful for all these little ones, what would we do without them.

It's been a good weekend for us so far. We were really happy to have Kyle and Kaitlyn come to Provo/Salt Lake for conference so that we had a chance to see them. They got to go to the Saturday Morning Session. Other than that we've been running Kyle around to different jewelers in a search for the perfect engagement ring, and we all went out to dinner last night at Benihana (we really love that place). We also went and saw the movie Premonition starring Sandra Bullock...I wouldn't really recommend it.
